It also ties the house to Amos Judkins, who with John H. Lothrop helped develop part of Newtonville by buying and subdividing land into house lots.","narrative":"Built around 1884 at 8 Central Avenue in Newtonville, this large Queen Anne house was erected for Amos C. Judkins (1838-1906), a Maine native who worked in the railroad car wheel business in Boston. The design is loosely based on the medieval manor houses of English architect Richard Norman Shaw. It has an irregular form, walls covered in clapboards and decorative shingles, recessed balconies, and asymmetrical projections ornamented with turned balusters, paneling, incised decoration and scrollwork. A gabled front porch, a porte-cochere, a glazed conservatory and tall clustered chimneys add to the effect. The house has survived virtually intact, with a carriage house still on the lot. In retirement Judkins and John H. Lothrop bought large tracts near Crafts and Watertown streets and subdivided them into house lots in the late 1880s and 1890s. Judkins Street is named for him. After his death in 1906 the house passed to his widow, Mary.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded as in good condition, with no major alterations, and in use as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.71826-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7911/63791152/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001846.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001846/723ef89ae1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001846/723ef89ae1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_AmosJudkinsHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_AmosJudkinsHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791152","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Judkins_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4747895"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/judkins-amos-house-86001846/"}
