It also remains a good example of a house type once common in Newton, and it was owned by Joshua Jenison, a soap manufacturer.","narrative":"This house at 11 Thornton Street in Newton Corner dates to about the 1840s and follows the Greek Revival style. Its narrow gabled end faces the street, with a pedimented front gable, a flush-boarded facade, Doric corner pilasters and a fully articulated entablature. The entrance sits to the right with sidelights, and a two-sided veranda on fluted Doric columns wraps the facade and south side. The form borrows from the Greek temple, and the side-hall plan that resulted stayed popular through the rest of the nineteenth century. In 1855 the property was owned by Joshua Jenison (or Jennison), a soap manufacturer whose factory stood at School and Pearl Streets nearby. His family had come to the city in 1795, and he was an original member of the Eliot Church. The house is described as a modest but exceptionally well-preserved local example of a type once common in Newton. Later 19th-century ells were added, and the house remains a dwelling in very good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition described as very good, with ells added during the 19th century and a garage on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.924284-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/7909/63790900/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001844.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001844/04d7809a6b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001844/04d7809a6b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_JoshuaJennisonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_JoshuaJennisonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790900","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Jennison_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6289950"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/jennison-joshua-house-86001844/"}
