The form dates it to 1760, with a porch and trim added around 1850. Its rectangular plan, low-pitched hip roof, five-bay facade, twin rear wall chimneys and long rear ell reflect Federal period design, while the full-length sidelights at the entrance and the full-width veranda with fluted Doric columns are mid-nineteenth century changes. Edward Jackson, brother of Newton's first settler John Jackson, built an earlier house on the site. His great-grandson, Captain Samuel Jackson, had it torn down to build the present house. Jonathan Hunnewell owned the property by 1797, followed by Charles Torrey in 1827 and Josiah Gillmore from 1843. It was listed for its architecture and its link to the Jackson family.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is dwelling; condition described as very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.836057-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7907/63790763/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001843.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001843/27e92bc1b2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001843/27e92bc1b2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Jackson,_Jr._House,_Newton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Jackson,_Jr._House,_Newton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790763","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Jackson_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411819"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/jackson-samuel-jr-house-86001843/"}
