It meets Criterion C for its architecture.","narrative":"Built around 1744 on Greenwood Street in Newton's Oak Hill area, this farmhouse is a two-and-a-half-story, gable-roofed Mid-Georgian dwelling with a two-room center-hall plan. A large chimney rises from the center of the ridge. The five-bay facade has paired outer windows, six-over-six sash, and upper windows set into the cornice. The house sits on a low granite foundation and has almost no ornament beyond narrow corner boards. A rear ell and an enclosed entrance porch were added later. It stands along a road laid out in 1711. Gershom Hyde (1719-1754) may have been the first occupant, and his nephew Thaddeus Hyde later appears as an owner. Thaddeus's heirs sold the house and 53 acres to Edward Wales in 1860, and members of the Wales family began a fruit preserving business in 1867. The house was listed because few Georgian farmhouses remain in Newton and it represents a locally common type.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good; it is in use as a dwelling, with an enclosed entrance porch and rear ell added later.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.168348-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7911/63791106/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001840.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001840/7ca2550806-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001840/7ca2550806-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_GershomHydeHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_GershomHydeHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791106","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gershom_Hyde_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715490"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hyde-gershom-house-86001840/"}
