It sits on about 1.49 acres along an early road to Sherborn.","why_significant":"The form argues it is one of Newton's few surviving Late Georgian residences and is tied to the Hyde family, among the city's first settlers. It is also a good example of the post-1750 two-room, central-hall, rear-chimney plan favored by more prosperous householders. Later owners and developers connect it to the suburban growth of Waban.","narrative":"Built around 1770 at 401 Woodward Street in Waban, this clapboard house represents the High Georgian style in Newton. It follows a plan that spread after 1750, with two rooms flanking a central hall and twin chimneys in the rear wall, replacing the older central-chimney arrangement. Its pilastered, pedimented entrance, 6/9 sash windows framed into the cornice on the upper story, and crown mouldings on the first-floor windows are noted features. The land belonged to Eleazer Hyde Senior, one of Newton's earliest settlers, and passed to his son Eleazer Hyde Jr. After several changes of ownership, Edward Wyman bought the estate in 1866. It was later sold to real estate speculators who subdivided it into 87 house lots after the Circuit Railroad improved service to Boston in 1886. Architect H. Langford Warren remodelled the farmhouse. It remains a dwelling in very good condition, with an ell and porch added in the late nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Eleazer Hyde","architectural_style":"High Georgian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is listed as very good, with a garage as an outbuilding and later alterations including an ell and a west porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.935178-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/7920/63792079/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001839.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001839/0516560bd5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001839/0516560bd5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_EleazerHydeHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_EleazerHydeHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792079","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleazer_Hyde_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5354475"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hyde-eleazer-house-86001839/"}
