It was moved to its present site in 1909.","why_significant":"The nomination argues for significance under Criterion B because of its association with the Hyde family, who lived in the Newton Corner area from the seventeenth century. Deacon Samuel Hyde, an early Newton settler, is thought to have built the original house. The family farm and nursery shaped local development and street names.","narrative":"This house at 27 George Street in Newton Corner is a Greek Revival sidehall dwelling of two and one-half stories, with its gable end facing the street. The entrance is offset to the left and flanked by full-length sidelights, and a two-sided Doric portico encircles the lower story. Parts of the building are thought to date from the seventeenth century. Fire destroyed the original house in 1709, and it was rebuilt at once. It was enlarged before 1792 and again in 1823, a library was added in 1865, and the house was moved from Centre Street in 1909. Deacon Samuel Hyde, thought to have built the first house, arrived from London in 1639 and was among Newton's earliest settlers. With his brother he laid out the road that became Centre Street. The 43-acre Hyde farm stayed in the family for eight generations and supported a nursery. George, Garden and Hyde Streets take their names from the family's farm.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; Deacon Samuel Hyde is thought to have built the original house","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.124533-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/81/7903/63790381/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001838.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001838/c666ad5f6d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001838/c666ad5f6d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hyde_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hyde_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790381","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_House_(Newton,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715608"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/hyde-house-86001838/"}
