The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an excellent, well-preserved example of the small end-gabled workers' cottage that appeared in Newton by the 1830s and continued to be built after the Civil War. It sits in a cluster of early workers' housing in the Gardner and School Streets neighborhood. Such cottages were associated with Irish workmen who came to Newton Corner just before the Civil War.","narrative":"This small double house at 81-83 Gardner Street in Newton Corner dates to the mid-nineteenth century. It is a clapboard workers' cottage with its gable end facing the street and entrances on the side. The upper bedroom level, built with kneewall construction, is lit by a pair of windows. Ornament is absent, which is typical of modest workers' housing, and the house is plain, inexpensive and soundly built. It remains in very good condition with no recorded major alterations. The house belongs to a cluster of early workers' dwellings in the Gardner and School Streets neighborhood. Cottages of this type are found in other Boston-area communities such as Cambridge and in early industrial villages across southern New England, but Newton Corner and Nonantum have a relatively large number. Such cottages were associated mostly with Irish workmen who arrived shortly before the Civil War. Thomas Dunn, a gardener, lived here until about 1900. The house was listed for its architectural character and its link to local working-class settlement.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is dwelling; condition is very good, with no major alterations and no outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.070664-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/7913/63791312/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001836.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001836/0620043af9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001836/0620043af9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_81-83GardnerStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_81-83GardnerStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791312","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_81%E2%80%9383_Gardner_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715596"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-81-83-gardner-street-86001836/"}
