It is very well preserved and has typical Greek Revival details. It also reflects local history through its occupants, including a schoolmaster and a later farmstead owner.","narrative":"Built around 1855 at the intersection of two major roads in Newton's Oak Hill area, this small cottage is described as the neighborhood's best remaining example of Greek Revival design in cottage form. It is five bays wide, with a gable roof resting on a delicately detailed two-part entablature. Corner pilasters with oversized capitals mark the facade, and the wide door surround with sidelights and six-over-six sash are typical of the style. A local carpenter built the house, and its condition is excellent. It was built for Calvin Rand, about whom little is known. By 1874 a local schoolmaster, H.E. Howard, lived there, and the Oak Hill school stood nearby at 742 Dedham Street. In the 1880s William Sanderson owned the property, adding a two-story rear ell in 1886 and operating it as a farmstead. The house has not been moved and remains a dwelling.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by a local carpenter","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as very good; present use is a dwelling, the same as its original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.884622-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/98/7908/63790898/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001835.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001835/cbe4f46103-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001835/cbe4f46103-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_729DedhamStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_729DedhamStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_729_Dedham_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715595"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-729-dedham-street-86001835/"}
