It stands on a bluff overlooking the Charles River.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an important local example of the Italian villa style as miniaturized for smaller dwellings, meeting Criterion C. Its L-plan, three-story tower and early Italianate detailing recall a type usually seen in more elaborate houses.","narrative":"Built around 1850 on a bluff above the Charles River in Newton Corner, this modest L-plan house follows the Tuscan or Italian villa mode that was popular in the mid-nineteenth century. The style was promoted by the publications of A.J. Downing and was usually applied to larger, more elaborate residences, so a version scaled down for a small dwelling is uncommon. A three-story tower sits where the two wings meet and has round-headed windows in its upper story. The gable-roofed wings have deep cornices and returns typical of early Italianate houses. Early occupants probably enjoyed picturesque views from the tower. In 1855 the house was owned by Stephen Perry, who lived nearby in Watertown and held several properties in the area. In 1874 it was occupied by C.O. Lummus, a carpenter with a shop on Centre Street. The house is valued as a local example of the miniaturized villa type. It remains a dwelling in very good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate (Tuscan or Italian villa mode)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"In present use as a dwelling; condition described as very good, with a 20th-century porch alteration and a shed outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.272128-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7910/63791006/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001833.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001833/614dd72df5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001833/614dd72df5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_60WilliamStreetNewtonCorner.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_60WilliamStreetNewtonCorner.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791006","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_60_William_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-60-william-street-86001833/"}
