It is also representative of the large suburban houses built by Boston commuters in Chestnut Hill in the 1890s. It meets Criterion C.","narrative":"Built in 1894, this Shingle Style house on Middlesex Road in Chestnut Hill, Newton, reflects the growth of the area as a year-round suburb for Boston businessmen and professionals. William Dupee, who also owned an estate on Beacon Street, built it. Later it belonged to George Warren, who ran a roofing business. The first story is fieldstone, a favorite local combination, and the upper floors are covered in dark brown stained wood shingles. Swept conical roofs on the turret and veranda stand out, and the house is a mass of interlocking geometric forms typical of mainstream Shingle Style design. Upper window sashes have diamond-paned muntins, a medieval motif popular in late Queen Anne designs. A 1930s one-and-a-half-story wing and garage were added, and the condition is very good. It was listed as an outstanding local example of its style and of the large commuter houses of 1890s Chestnut Hill.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by William Dupee","architectural_style":"Shingle Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as very good, with a 1930s wing and garage added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.295209-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7912/63791258/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001830.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001830/7624a5c156-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001830/7624a5c156-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_41MiddlesexRoad.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_41MiddlesexRoad.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791258","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_41_Middlesex_Road","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715582"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-41-middlesex-road-86001830/"}
