It is a clapboard residence on a lot of about 13,332 square feet.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well-preserved example of high-styled Greek Revival architecture in Newton, meeting criterion C. It keeps virtually all of its original detailing, including a four-columned Ionic portico. It is one of only about six intact Greek Revival temple-front houses remaining in the city.","narrative":"Built around 1835 in West Newton, this clapboard house on Waltham Street is a temple-fronted Greek Revival residence. Monumental Ionic columns support the front portico, which has a second-level balcony, and an Ionic colonnade runs along the side porch. Virtually all of its original detailing survives, and the building has had no major alterations. About six intact Greek Revival temple-front houses remain in Newton, and most of them share the same four-columned Ionic portico seen here. Its early ownership is uncertain, though a J. C. Jones owned it in 1855. Around 1862 it passed to Joseph A. Newell, a Boston boot and shoe dealer whose large store at Essex and Chauncy streets was known across much of New England. Later owners included Frederick W. Yelland and Albert W. Gilmore. It was listed for its architectural quality as a well-preserved example of high-style Greek Revival design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in good condition, with no major alterations, no outbuildings, and not moved; present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.562846-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7908/63790896/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001828.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001828/40b08454a4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001828/40b08454a4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt309WalthamStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt309WalthamStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790896","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_309_Waltham_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715579"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-309-waltham-street-86001828/"}
