It has clapboard walls and no outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it meets Criterion C as an excellent, well-preserved example of the Greek Revival style as miniaturized for smaller dwellings. Its gable end faces the street to recall the silhouette of a pedimented Greek temple. It also reflects the subdivision of a larger houselot by an early owner.","narrative":"Built around 1860, this small Greek Revival cottage at 307 Lexington Street in Auburndale, Newton, is a one-and-a-half-story house on a sidehall plan. Its gable end faces the street in an attempt to reproduce the outline of a Greek temple front. A deep overhang is carried by a one-story, full-width portico, and the pedimented roof rests on a classical entablature supported by fluted Doric columns. Clapboard covers the walls, and the house has seen no major alterations. It remains in very good condition as a dwelling. An earlier example of the form stands at 83 High Street, dating to the 1830s. The first Newton Directory, in 1868, lists James Dolliver as owner. The lot once ran west through to Freeman Street, and an 1874 atlas shows Dolliver dividing it into smaller parcels that were later built on. The house was recognized as an excellent, well-preserved small-scale interpretation of Greek Revival design.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is very good, with no major alterations and no move.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.304692-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/94/7908/63790894/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001827.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001827/6f062f2ab8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001827/6f062f2ab8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt307LexingtonStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt307LexingtonStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790894","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_307_Lexington_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914212"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-307-lexington-street-86001827/"}
