It sits on a corner lot at the edge of a Victorian residential district.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an elaborately detailed and well-preserved example of a modest Italianate residence. Curvilinear brackets at the doorway, windows and cornice, plus unusually ornate trim for a house of this size, are its dominant features. It was also owned by Charles Burrill, a Boston insurance man.","narrative":"Built around 1853 on a corner lot in West Newton, this clapboard house at 3 Davis Avenue is a small but richly detailed example of Italianate design. Its narrow, front-gabled main block is dominated by curvilinear brackets, which appear at the doorway, above the windows and along the cornice line. The trim is unusually ornate for a house of this size and includes corner blocks and long front parlor windows. The architect is unknown, and the house has had no major alterations, leaving it in good, well-preserved condition. Early ownership records list Mrs. J. Purdie in 1855. By 1874 the property belonged to Charles Burrill (1838-1916), a Boston-born insurance man associated with the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. A very similar Italianate house was built nearby at 15 Davis Avenue shortly afterward. The house was listed for its architectural qualities as a well-preserved, elaborately detailed modest Italianate residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; no major alterations, not moved, no outbuildings; present use is residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.947534-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/7910/63791004/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001826.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001826/cc00231a7f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001826/cc00231a7f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt3DavisAvenue.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HouseAt3DavisAvenue.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791004","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_3_Davis_Avenue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914302"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-3-davis-avenue-86001826/"}
