The five-bay, two-story dwelling sits under a low-pitched gable roof, with a saltbox extension at the rear. It faces north, an uncommon orientation. The door surround is simple but refined, with delicate pilasters showing entasis supporting a low entablature and frieze, and paired 12/12 windows on the second floor are framed into the cornice. The house is valued as a good example of highly developed vernacular Georgian building. Hastings, born in 1671 and originally from Watertown, served as surveyor of highways and hogreeve and signed a 1713 petition for a more accessible meeting house. His sons sold the farm in 1760 to housewright Samuel Richardson. John Schworer, a farmer, bought the property in 1874 and stayed until 1949. The house is still a dwelling in very good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; probably built by Thomas Hastings","architectural_style":"Georgian New England saltbox (vernacular Georgian farmhouse)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as very good; present use is a dwelling, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.720609-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7914/63791466/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001822.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001822/404ee5132d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001822/404ee5132d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_215BrooklineStreet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_215BrooklineStreet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791466","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_215_Brookline_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914111"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-215-brookline-street-86001822/"}
