It reflects the homes of Newton's emerging upper middle class in the late nineteenth century. It meets Criterion C for its Shingle style design with Colonial Revival overtones.","narrative":"Built around 1897 on a corner lot along Beacon Street in Newton Centre, this square-plan house combines the Shingle style with Colonial Revival touches. A gable roof is crossed by an oversized gambrel gable covered in patterned cut wood shingles. The main focus is a Syrian-arched entrance porch of coursed, dressed fieldstone, joined by oriel windows, a tall fieldstone chimney, and stained and bevelled glass. Applied wooden swags decorate the frieze, a favored Colonial Revival motif. The house is typical of the large, architect-designed homes built for Newton's emerging upper middle class in the late nineteenth century along Beacon Street west of the village center. Its first occupant, in 1899, was Joseph W. Barrows, who soon moved to Lake Avenue. Christopher Goddard, a Boston insurance broker, lived here from 1903. The house remains a dwelling in very good condition, with no major alterations recorded and a garage on the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival / Shingle style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as very good with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.690316-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/7906/63790667/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001813.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001813/e72be4e1e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001813/e72be4e1e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_1008_Beacon_St.,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_1008_Beacon_St.,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76002137","name":"Woodland, Newton Highlands, and Newton Centre Railroad Stations, and Baggage and Express Building","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/woodland-newton-highlands-and-newton-centre-railroad-stations-and-baggage-and-ex-76002137/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790667","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_1008_Beacon_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715561"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/house-at-1008-beacon-street-86001813/"}
