It displays abundant applied wooden trim made possible by the scroll saw. It also reflects the subdivision of the George C. Lord estate for wealthy Boston professionals and merchants.","narrative":"Built in 1879 at 27 Sargent Street in Newton Corner, this clapboard dwelling is one of very few Gothic Revival houses in the neighborhood and is regarded as the finest high-style example in Newton. It rises two and one-half stories on a square plan under a steeply pitched hip roof broken by steep wall dormers. A two-sided porch sits beneath a cantilevered standing-seam roof, and a gabled tower is offset to the right of the entrance. Double doors have stained-glass upper panels and arched transoms. Much of the applied woodwork, produced with the newly invented scroll saw, draws on medieval ideas, including pointed arches in the porch balusters and a trefoil design in the facade gable. An elaborate porte-cochere adds to the effect. The lot was once part of George C. Lord's large estate, sold off after 1875 near fashionable Kenrick Park. Charles Haskell, a Boston leather dealer, was among the wealthy buyers. The house remains a dwelling in excellent condition and unaltered.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"High Victorian Gothic (Gothic Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent, with no major alterations and no outbuildings; present use is a dwelling, as was the original use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.865712-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7909/63790970/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001812.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001812/d1501ed5b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001812/d1501ed5b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Haskell_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Haskell_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790970","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Haskell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5078831"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/haskell-charles-house-86001812/"}
