It is argued to meet Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1800 at 303 Ward Street in Newton Centre, this clapboard dwelling is a rare local example of Federal architecture. It is a two-and-a-half-story house with a low-pitched hip roof and a boxy rectangular mass with few projections. The five-bay facade has paired outer windows and a center window aligned with the entrance. Corner pilasters and window mouldings made of mitred wood strips are other Federal features. A Colonial Revival entrance porch with a deck balustrade and a two-story porch on the west side were added later. The house is one of three Federal period houses on Ward Street, all predating 1835, linked to the Ward family, early inhabitants of the area. Later owners included members of the Harbach family, provision dealers whose ancestors came to Newton from England in 1723, and Harvey James, a provision dealer who lived there from 1873 to 1907. The house remains a dwelling in very good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as very good; present and original use is dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.21562-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/7907/63790729/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001809.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001809/07b3f32a9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001809/07b3f32a9e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Biruitorul","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JHarbachHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Biruitorul</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JHarbachHouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790729","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harbach_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6237690"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/harbach-john-house-86001809/"}
