Gane, and the architect is unknown. It originally stood a few hundred feet away, at Waltham and Derby streets, on about 16 acres of landscaped grounds and greenhouses. It was moved to its present corner around 1914 as house lots were laid out. The building is noted for a planar, symmetrical facade, paired side bay windows typical of 1860s West Newton, and an ornate porch with clustered posts, valance boards and vase-turned balusters. Window surrounds are molded, with curved labels, flared jambs and feet at the sills. Gane (1811-1897), born in England, built a bookbinding and bookbinders' supply business in Boston, then retired to grow flowers. His chrysanthemum seedlings won prizes. After his death the land was subdivided. The house is in good condition and still a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mansard","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.135569-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7910/63791078/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001806.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001806/8cff57a774-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001806/8cff57a774-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HenryGaneHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_HenryGaneHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791078","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Gane_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5721787"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/gane-henry-house-86001806/"}
