Its elaborately patterned, polychrome slate roof shows the skill of Samuel Farquhar, a local slater who lived there. It meets Criterion C for architecture.","narrative":"Built around 1868 at 7 Channing Street in Newton Corner, this small dwelling shows how the Mansard style was scaled down for modest homes. The cottage follows a sidehall plan, and its bellcast Mansard roof gave extra headroom for living space in the attic story. The roof is covered in hexagonal and square slates in red, yellow and black, a banded pattern of contrasting color that was uncommon before 1868. A rear corner tower has a polygonal slate roof topped with wrought iron cresting, and the ornamental trim on the front veranda and dormers remains well preserved. Samuel Farquhar, a local slater, lived here in the 1870s, and the roof displays his craft. His family kept the property into the early 1900s. The house is regarded as one of the best Mansard cottages in Newton, in a neighborhood where Channing Street holds several other fine examples. Asbestos siding was added in the twentieth century, and the house remains a dwelling.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mansard","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition described as good; still used as a dwelling, with 20th-century asbestos siding applied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.349704-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7910/63791076/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001798.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001798/aa1ce4f8ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001798/aa1ce4f8ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Farquhar_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Farquhar_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791076","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Farquhar_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411361"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/farquhar-samuel-house-86001798/"}
