It sits on a suburban lot of under one acre and is still used as a dwelling.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the earliest suburban residences built in Auburndale after the North Auburn Dale Land Company began subdividing and developing the area in 1847. It is also an excellent, well-preserved example of the Greek Revival sidehall type of suburban house. It is justified under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1848 at 33 Woodland Road in Auburndale, this clapboard house is a well-preserved example of the Greek Revival sidehall form adapted for suburban living. It went up shortly after the North Auburn Dale Land Company began subdividing and developing the neighborhood in 1847, making it one of the earliest suburban residences there. Rufus Estabrook, a Boston broker, is believed to have been its first owner. The house keeps many hallmarks of its style: a full-width one-story Ionic portico, an entrance offset to the left with transom and sidelights, wide corner pilasters, pedimented dormers and six-over-six windows. Its most distinctive feature is the unusual openwork in the porch frieze. Old city atlases show that a barn once stood where the present garage is. The house has had no major alterations, remains a dwelling in very good condition, and was listed for its early role in Auburndale's suburban growth and its architectural quality.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as very good, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.464405-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/7914/63791423/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001795.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001795/4861db27a7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001795/4861db27a7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_RufusEstabrookHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_RufusEstabrookHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791423","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufus_Estabrook_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7378030"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/estabrook-rufus-house-86001795/"}
