It is also known as the Claflin Apartment Block.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an unusual example of the Shingle Style applied to multi-family housing and the earliest identified apartment block in Newton. It is also tied to William Claflin, a prominent Newtonville real estate developer and former governor of Massachusetts.","narrative":"Built in 1887, this apartment block on a cul-de-sac off Walnut Street in Newtonville was commissioned by William Claflin as a real estate investment. Claflin, who lived from 1818 to 1905 and served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1869 to 1871, was the village's most prominent resident of the late nineteenth century and owned many residential and commercial properties there. The building is divided into four sections by three stepped brick firewalls. Two front-gabled end sections are joined by a long flank-gable roof with four pedimented dormers. Bay windows and recessed Queen Anne style entrances with sidelights and transoms add variety. The lower walls are now covered in asbestos shingles, though staggered butt shingles on the dormers suggest the original covering. Apartment blocks are much less common in Newton than in suburbs such as Brookline or Cambridge, and this is the earliest identified example in the city. It remains in multi-family residential use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne/Shingle Style","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Present and original use is multi-family residential; condition is described as fair, with asbestos shingle siding added in the 20th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.45232-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7914/63791448/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001779.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001779/2e515f1f22-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001779/2e515f1f22-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_BuildingAt1_6WalnutTerrace.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_BuildingAt1_6WalnutTerrace.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791448","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_1%E2%80%936_Walnut_Terrace","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4986532"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/building-at-1-6-walnut-terrace-86001779/"}
