It represents the wood frame suburban houses built by Boston commuters in Newton Corner after the Civil War. It is argued to meet Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Built around 1864 at 33-35 Waban Street in Newton Corner, this clapboard house is a sidehall Mansard dwelling with a long rear ell. It retains its bellcast Mansard roof with early fish scale patterned slate, ornate segmental dormers and a denticular cornice. Two single-story polygonal bay windows, a feature that began in the Italianate period, and elaborate porches at the main and rear entrances add to its character. An arcaded iron fence cast at a Waltham foundry borders the property, and an ornate Mansard-roofed carriage house with a ventilator stands at the rear. John Buckingham, pastor of the Unitarian Church in Chestnut Hill, moved here in 1866, and the Buckingham family owned it until 1973. Regular commuter rail service from 1844 spurred suburban growth in Newton Corner, and this house is considered representative of the wood frame homes built by Boston commuters and the newly rich upper middle class. Its exceptional preservation supports its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mansard","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is dwelling; condition is described as very good, with no major alterations and not moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.810368-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7914/63791437/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001778.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001778/92013a2615-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001778/92013a2615-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Buckingham_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Buckingham_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791437","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buckingham_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6223752"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/buckingham-john-house-86001778/"}
