He was also a prominent educator and a patron of the Newton Free Library. The house is also a well-preserved example of Greek Revival detailing.","narrative":"Built around 1845, this clapboard house at 15 Bigelow Terrace in Newton Corner was moved to its present site in 1895 from 334 Washington Street. It is a three-bay, end-gabled dwelling with Greek Revival features, including a wide eaves entablature, paneled corner pilasters, cornice returns and sidelights at the entrance. The uneven spacing of the front windows is unusual for a period that favored rigid classical symmetry. The house is in very good condition, with a 20th-century porch as its main alteration, and it remains a dwelling. Its historical importance rests on Dr. Henry Bigelow, a prominent educator who chaired the school committee while Newton's school system was regarded as one of the most progressive in the country. He also supported the Newton Free Library. The Bigelow School in Newton Corner was named for him, and Bigelow Terrace apparently takes its name from the family.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Condition described as very good; currently used as a dwelling, with a 20th-century porch added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.883058-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/7920/63792066/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001774.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001774/5eb7f9ff3c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001774/5eb7f9ff3c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Bigelow_House,_Newton_Corner_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Bigelow_House,_Newton_Corner_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792066","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Bigelow_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5718184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/bigelow-henry-house-86001774/"}
