It was moved to its present site in 1915 from 27 Metacomet Road.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it Waban's only intact Federal period structure. Its 19th- and 20th-century changes show a progression of styles and technology in American domestic architecture, so it meets Criterion C.","narrative":"This farmhouse at 15 Winnetaska Road in Waban, Newton, began around 1736 as a three-bay half house with a saltbox roof, a chimney behind the ridge and a dog-leg stair between the entrance and chimney. It was later extended two bays to the north, giving the look of a five-bay, center-entrance house. The entrance, with sidelights and paneled pilasters, appears to date from the late Federal period. A second story and entrance were added around 1820, a north ell before 1895, and a rear lean-to and ell around 1915, when the house was moved from 27 Metacomet Road. The first section is thought to date from the 1736 marriage of Ebenezer Bartlett and Anne Clark. Elisha Bartlett bought the 100-acre farm in 1788, and his son Peregrine sold it in the early 1850s to farmer George B. Hawkes. It is listed as Waban's only intact Federal period structure and as an example of changing domestic architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as excellent; present use is dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.690559-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/27/7907/63790727/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001770.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001770/0176d290c2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001770/0176d290c2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_BartlettHawkesFarm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_BartlettHawkesFarm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790727","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartlett%E2%80%93Hawkes_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4865380"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/bartlett-hawkes-farm-86001770/"}
