It is also typical of the homes of commuters, such as Boston merchants, who settled in Newton in the late nineteenth century, on land sold off from the Brackett estate.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at 37 Park Avenue in Newton Corner, this Queen Anne house remains a dwelling in very good condition, with no major alterations recorded. It is a rectangular box under a steeply pitched hip roof, but its character comes from asymmetry and variety. Porches and balconies of differing sizes and positions wrap the form, tall panelled chimneys rise above it, and a low octagonal corner tower serves as the focal point. Abundant applied wooden ornament and walls clad in patterned shingles add detail, and a carriage house stands on the lot. The land was once part of the Brackett estate, home of the oldest and largest coal and wood yards in Newton, which was sold off in portions as suburban development advanced near the end of the nineteenth century. Amos Adams, a Boston commission merchant who lived here, typified the commuters who settled in Newton. The house was listed as an outstanding, well-preserved local example of the style.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recorded in very good condition, with no major alterations and not moved; still used as a dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.061871-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7911/63791150/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001767.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001767/c526625145-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001767/c526625145-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amos_Adams_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amos_Adams_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_Adams_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4747819"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/adams-amos-house-86001767/"}
