The architect and builder are unknown. A shingle style carriage house stands at the rear of the 1.9-acre lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant as an example of the Cincinnati industrial managers who chose to live in Wyoming and helped make it a representative historic suburb. Elmer Hess, president of Spring and Axe Company (later Carthage Mills), lived there from construction until 1911. It is also an unusually fine and well-preserved example of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival influences, and one of few of its period to keep its full setting and orientation on Springfield Pike.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 333 Springfield Pike in Wyoming, Ohio, dates to about 1900 and shows Queen Anne and Colonial Revival influences. It has weatherboard walls, a quarry-cut ashlar foundation, and a hip-and-gable slate roof. Features include a polygonal bay pavilion, a main doorway with leaded-glass sidelights and transom, and an Ionic veranda with a finely turned balustrade. Around 1940 part of the veranda was enclosed as a two-story addition at the south end. A shingle style carriage house sits at the rear of the 1.9-acre lot. The house is tied to Elmer Hess, president of Spring and Axe Company, later Carthage Mills, in Carthage, part of Cincinnati. He lived here from its construction until 1911. It represents the Cincinnati industrial managers who settled in Wyoming and shaped it as a historic suburb. It is also one of few houses of its period to keep its full setting and orientation on Springfield Pike. The property remains a well-preserved residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne influence (with Colonial Revival style influences)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence; interior and exterior condition both listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.878641-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86001633.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001633/220ac0d97d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001633/220ac0d97d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ElmerHessHouseLR.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Photo by Greg Hume (Greg5030)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ElmerHessHouseLR.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986426","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmer_Hess_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5366575"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/hamilton-county/hess-elmer-house-86001633/"}
