The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the most architecturally significant remaining railroad passenger station in central Youngstown. It is an intact reminder of the role railroads played in the city's growth as a manufacturing and population center. It is the earliest and least altered of the three surviving downtown stations, and the only one built strictly as a passenger depot in the first quarter of the 20th century.","narrative":"Built in 1905 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, this passenger station at 530 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown is a two and one-half story building of buff-colored brick in an eclectic Georgian Revival style. A gabled central pavilion and a crenelated porte cochere mark the main facade, and the rear faces the tracks, which run on an embankment above the Mahoning River. Inside, a two-story waiting room retains its tile floor, pressed metal ceiling, balconies, ticket counter and elevator. The station cost $70,000 and was considered one of Ohio's finest at the time. It had features such as an underground tunnel to the eastbound track and a water-powered baggage elevator. Passenger service ended in the mid-1970s, and the building was vacated about 1981. It was listed as the most architecturally significant surviving passenger station in central Youngstown, and as the least altered of the three downtown stations, with its setting still intact.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Eclectic Georgian Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant since about 1981 after passenger service ended in the mid-1970s; many windows are boarded up, though original windows appear intact.
