It is also tied to Lowell's industrial and commercial growth through its owners, Samuel Brown, a Boott Mills superintendent, and Caleb Maynard, a dry goods merchant. It meets criteria A and C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1852-1853 on Tenth Street in Lowell's Centralville neighborhood, this two-story Italianate house has a square plan, clapboard walls, a shallow hip roof topped by a bracketed belvedere, and a Doric-columned verandah wrapping the south and west sides. Inside, a freestanding curved mahogany stair, a cast-iron fireplace and a gilt ceiling cornice survive largely unaltered. Most Italianate houses in Centralville were modest side-hall buildings, so this larger, more elaborate design stands out. It was probably built by Samuel Brown, superintendent at the Boott Mills, and later belonged to Caleb Maynard, who ran a fancy dry goods store on Merrimack Street. Both men prospered from the city's mid-19th-century growth, and the house reflects the standing that such positions could bring. It stayed in Maynard's family for over eighty years. The property also holds potential archaeological remains, such as privies, wells and the foundations of vanished buildings.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1852-1853","architect_builder":"Unknown (probably built by Samuel Brown)","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.741566-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7955/63795564/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001460.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001460/7f4408b017-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001460/7f4408b017-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brown-Maynard_House,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00090.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brown-Maynard_House,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00090.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795564","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown%E2%80%93Maynard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4975979"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/brown-maynard-house-86001460/"}
