It combines Italianate and Eastlake features and is used as a residence.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinguished example of Italianate residential architecture in Canastota. Its cubic massing, hipped roof, broad eaves and wide frieze are Italianate traits, while the front porch shows Eastlake influence. It is one of several picturesque late-nineteenth century houses in the village's multiple resource group.","narrative":"Built around 1875 on the west side of Stroud Street in Canastota, this two-story frame house combines Italianate form with Eastlake ornament. It has a cubic mass under a low hipped roof with a central cross gable, broad projecting eaves and a bead and reel pattern along the cornice. Twentieth-century shingles now cover the walls. The three-bay front includes a four-part oriel window and miter-arched lintels. An elaborate porch with turned and pierced woodwork spans the facade and shows the Eastlake influence. A one-and-one-half story rear wing and a modern garage, which does not contribute to the property's significance, extend behind. Inside, the house was remodelled for apartments and the main stairwell is gone, but some molded trim and a marble fireplace with inlaid Eastlake detailing survive in the southeast parlor. It was listed as a distinguished local example of Italianate residential design, comparable to other late-nineteenth century houses in the village. The architect, builder and original owners are unknown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate with Eastlake style features","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in excellent condition and in residential use; the interior has been remodelled for multi-family use.
