It was originally mixed commercial and residential and is now a museum.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is architecturally significant as a representative example of the modest mixed commercial/residential buildings that once lined the canal basin in Canastota's first central business district. It is described as the only intact historic reminder of that earliest business district, which lost prominence after the 1873 fire and the shift toward South Peterboro Street and the railroad.","narrative":"Overlooking the former Erie Canal basin at 122 Canal Street in Canastota, this small one-story frame building dates to about 1873-1874. It has a low hipped roof, a four-bay south facade with two entrances, a full-width hip-roofed porch, and two-over-two double-hung windows with miter-arched lintels. A fieldstone foundation is exposed at the rear where the lot slopes away, and a small rear wing was added at an unknown date. Inside, room layouts, plain wooden molding and wide plank floors survive. Maps from 1888 show it as a dressmaking shop and residence, and in the early twentieth century it housed the Canastota Bakery. It is now a museum. The building is valued as a modest vernacular example of the canal-side structures that once filled Canastota's first business district. After an 1873 fire and the growing importance of the railroad, commerce moved toward South Peterboro Street, leaving this building as the sole intact reminder of the earlier canal-side center.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular, canal-side commercial/residential building","criteria":[],"status_note":"Now in use as a museum; condition described as good, on its original site, with original interior features surviving.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.164999-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86001292.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001292/517c34a44c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001292/517c34a44c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canal_Town_Museum_Sept_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Canal_Town_Museum_Sept_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313482","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canal_Town_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5031030"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/canal-town-museum-86001292/"}
