It forms the fourth side of Harvard's Sever Quadrangle.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it the best example of a Harvard building showing the learned eclecticism of early twentieth-century American architecture (Criterion C). It also links it to the history of fine arts instruction at Harvard (Criterion B). It completes the Sever Quadrangle within the university's long-range building plan.","narrative":"Built in 1925 at 26-32 Quincy Street in Cambridge, the Fogg Art Museum is a brick Neo-Georgian building designed by Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott. It closes the fourth side of Harvard's Sever Quadrangle, across Quincy Street from the Yard, and its large mass does not overwhelm neighboring Emerson and Robinson Halls. The exterior borrows from colonial models: balcony consoles and pilastered window frames come from Boston's Old State House, and the main entrance is derived from Westover, the Byrd mansion in Virginia. Inside, a top-lit courtyard in travertine reproduces a loggia at Montepulciano at four-fifths scale. It replaced the earlier Fogg museum, Hunt Hall, and combined galleries, storage, offices, classrooms, a library and a lecture hall. It was listed as the best Harvard example of early twentieth-century eclectic design and for its role in teaching fine arts at the university.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbott","architectural_style":"Neo-Georgian","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as a museum in both present and original use; no major alterations are recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.170114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/7920/63792052/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001282.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001282/a204ef74de-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001282/a204ef74de-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fogg_Art_Museum,_Harvard_University.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fogg_Art_Museum,_Harvard_University.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792052","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fogg_Museum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q809600"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/fogg-art-museum-86001282/"}
