Woodcock and built in 1887-1888 on the site of the earlier High Street School.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is a rare, virtually intact wood-frame late 19th century educational building on a domestic scale. It is a fine, architect-designed example of the Queen Anne style with well-preserved interior and exterior detailing. It meets Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Washington School, at 8 School Street in East Weymouth, is a wood-frame schoolhouse built in 1887-1888 to designs by Boston architect Shepard S. Woodcock. It replaced the High Street School, which had occupied the site since 1839. The T-shaped building has clapboard and patterned shingle siding, fishscale belt courses, quarter-round sunbursts, turned spindles and twin side porches. Its original tower has been lost, but the interior still has oiled pine woodwork, hard pine floors and reeded door and window frames. With six classrooms on two floors, it replaced several small district schools and served as an elementary school for most of the 20th century. The school closed in 1981 and sat vacant until 1984, when it was rehabilitated as offices. It was listed for its rare, largely intact Queen Anne design on a domestic scale, and for its architect-designed detail, at the local level of significance.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Shepard S.
