A one-and-one-half-story brick house built 1831-32 was joined to a two-story 1883 section by a frame passage.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the longitudinal frame passage joining the 1832 and 1883 sections is the only known example of its type and period in Albemarle County. It also cites a ridgeboard in the 1832 section, a feature rarely seen in Virginia houses before the mid 1840s. The 1883 section retains nearly all of its grained woodwork in excellent condition.","narrative":"High Meadows is a house on a small hill just north of Scottsville, Albemarle County, built in two stages. Peter White built the original one-and-one-half-story brick dwelling between 1831 and 1832. In 1883 Charles B. Harris, a merchant's son, added a two-story stuccoed brick section that more than tripled the size of the house. A single-story frame passage runs between the two parts along their full length, and the survey of the county found no other example of this type and period. The older section also contains a ridgeboard, a construction detail rarely seen in Virginia houses before the mid 1840s. Inside the 1883 section, woodwork was grained to imitate mahogany and quartered oak, and most of it survives in excellent condition. The older plan was altered to match the symmetrical layout of the addition. The house reflects the mercantile society around Scottsville, a trading point on the James River and Kanawha Canal and the Staunton and James River Turnpike.","period_of_significance":"1832 & 1883","architect_builder":"Peter White","architectural_style":"Italianate (per 2008 survey update); early section described as late Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"At the time of nomination the house was being restored and renovated as a bed and breakfast inn; condition listed as excellent to good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.611658-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/6793/41679319/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/86001185.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001185/285b4cd2e0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001185/285b4cd2e0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HIGH_MEADOWS.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001236","name":"Southern Albemarle Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/southern-albemarle-rural-historic-district-07001236/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679319","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Meadows","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712534"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/high-meadows-86001185/"}
