The nominated lot also holds the foundation remains of two privies.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is a rare, intact surviving mid-nineteenth century frame schoolhouse in Onondaga County, with its classroom layout, finishes, woodwork and hardware largely preserved. It illustrates how a rural district responded to educational reform movements and to increased state funding for public schools in the mid-1800s. Features such as the movable central partition, well-lit classrooms, heating stoves and cloakroom vestibule reflect current school design ideas.","narrative":"Delphi Village School is a two-room frame schoolhouse on East Road in Delphi Falls, a small rural hamlet in southeastern Onondaga County. Built between 1854 and 1860, it is a one and one-half story T-plan building in a vernacular Greek Revival style, with clapboard and shiplap siding, an entablature with returns, and a gabled, bracketed belfry over the entrance vestibule. Inside, two classrooms are divided by panelled pocket doors, with diagonal oak flooring, plaster walls and wainscot panelling still in place. The school replaced earlier log schoolhouses and appears to have been made possible by mid-century increases in state school funding. Its windowed classrooms, stoves, cloakrooms and movable partition show awareness of contemporary reform ideas about school design. A woodshed was added in the nineteenth century. The school closed in 1960 and was sold at auction. It has since been renovated as residences while keeping its original plan and details. The lot also contains the foundations of two privies.","period_of_significance":"1854-1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular Greek Revival, with an Italianate style belfry","criteria":[],"status_note":"Excellent condition; converted to residential use as two studio apartments after the school closed in 1960, with original floor plan and details retained and the pre-1950 window pattern restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.708356-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86001152.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001152/ce0e3c36bc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001152/ce0e3c36bc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delphi_Village_School_Feb_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Delphi_Village_School_Feb_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320330","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi_Village_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5254409"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/delphi-village-school-86001152/"}
