The nominated area is the southern, still-used half of the cemetery, divided into Official, Johnston and Confederate plats.","why_significant":"The cemetery is the burial place of honored Texans, including Stephen F. Austin, Confederate soldiers, and several governors. It also holds notable funerary sculpture by Pompeo Coppini and Elisabet Ney. Efforts after 1925 brought the remains of more than 100 prominent figures to the site.","narrative":"Texas set aside this burial ground in Austin in 1851, when General Edward Burleson, a hero of the Texas Revolution, was interred there. The state bought the land in 1854. Use was light until the 1860s, when Confederate officers were buried. The nominated southern half holds three plats: the Official Plat, the Albert Sidney Johnston plat, and the Confederate Plat with rows of plain white marble markers for about 1,583 soldiers. Stephen F. Austin, Johanna Troutman, Big Foot Wallace, Ashbel Smith and Governor Francis Lubbock are buried here. Bronze figures of Austin and Troutman are by Pompeo Coppini, and the marble reclining figure of Johnston, made in 1903, is by Elisabet Ney. After 1925, efforts led by Louis Kemp and Governor Dan Moody brought the remains of more than 100 prominent Texans to the cemetery, including 76 reburied in 1936. The site is significant for military history, government, and sculpture.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":"Sculptors Pompeo Coppini (bronzes of Austin and Troutman) and Elisabet Ney (Johnston statue)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Physical condition is stated as excellent; the southern half is in use as a cemetery and no alterations are recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.447393-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/9703/40970364/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86001085.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001085/b6b7b3dbfd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001085/b6b7b3dbfd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"WhisperToMe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TexasStateCemeteryEntrance.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">WhisperToMe</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TexasStateCemeteryEntrance.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970364","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_State_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2342386"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/state-cemetery-of-texas-86001085/"}
