Both parts are tied to recognized Central Ohio architects, Jacob Orman and Howell & Thomas. It is also the oldest church building in Circleville still used for its original purpose.","narrative":"Built in 1868 on a site that was once part of a large prehistoric Indian mound known locally as Mount Gilboa, this sandstone church in Circleville is a rectangular Gothic Revival building with a steep patterned-slate gable roof, lancet-arched windows and a square pyramidal-roofed corner tower. Inside, walnut pews, doors and woodwork, exposed dark-stained roof trusses and a Gothic-arched balcony railing carry the style through the interior. A brick parish hall added in 1918 in the Tudor Revival style forms an L shape with the church and matches it in massing, color, scale and detailing. Jacob Orman of Lancaster designed the church, and the Columbus firm Howell & Thomas designed the addition. The congregation, organized in 1817 by Bishop Philander Chase, is the oldest continuous Christian congregation in Pickaway County, and this is the oldest church building in Circleville still serving its original purpose.","period_of_significance":"1868, 1918","architect_builder":"Jacob Orman, Howell & Thomas","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival (church); Tudor Revival (1918 addition)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent and the property is occupied; the church remains in use as a place of worship.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.737515-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86001064.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001064/ff552ddd35-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001064/ff552ddd35-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint_Philip%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Circleville.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint_Philip%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Circleville.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002171","name":"Circleville Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/circleville-historic-district-78002171/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990903","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Philip%27s_Episcopal_Church_(Circleville,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591517"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/pickaway-county/saint-philips-episcopal-church-86001064/"}
