It covers 1.33 acres and dates from about 1880 to 1931.","why_significant":"The extension adds the remaining part of Georgetown's historic central business district that was not yet listed. Its buildings show a later step in the downtown's architectural evolution and lack post-1935 construction. The 1931 Post Office is the most significant building and the city's best example of Georgian Revival architecture.","narrative":"Seven buildings on the 100 block of East 8th Street in Georgetown, Texas, one block southeast of the county courthouse, were added to the existing courthouse historic district. Most were built for commercial use, and they date from about 1880 to 1931. They include a two-story ashlar limestone building from 1901, a rubble limestone building of about 1880 that is among the city's oldest commercial structures, and a brick bakery building of about 1905. Four are counted as contributing and three, mostly built around 1925 or altered, are not. The 1931 Post Office is the most important building in the group. It is a one-and-a-half-story brick structure with Georgian Revival detailing, a truncated hip roof and a broken-pediment entry, and it is the city's finest example of that style. The addition brings in nearly all of Georgetown's historic commercial center and shows how downtown revitalization spread outward from the courthouse square. None of the buildings date from after 1935.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian Revival (Post Office); commercial buildings of limestone and brick","criteria":[],"status_note":"Two commercial buildings have been converted to professional offices, and three of the seven buildings were restored or rehabilitated after 1977.
