The house is an excellent, relatively intact example of late Victorian wood-frame vernacular architecture. The attached brick building is described as a pristine example of a nineteenth-century industrial structure.","narrative":"At 102 Chicon Street in East Austin stands a late Victorian cottage built around 1906 for Walter Schulze, joined by a covered breezeway to an older one-room brick building. The house is a one-story, wood-frame T-plan on brick piers, with a hipped roof, projecting front gable, fish-scale shingles, turned porch columns and ornate brackets. The brick building, made of Austin common brick on rubble limestone footings, was already present by 1890 and has a low-pitched standing-seam metal roof. The tract once belonged to the American Powder Mills company, which was chartered to manufacture explosives. Schulze bought it in 1902, and he and his wife lived in the house for decades. They ran a neighborhood store nearby that sold groceries, beer, feed, cigars, wood and charcoal, and offered shoe repair and haircuts. The property was listed because of this association and because both buildings remain largely intact examples of their types.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (Industrial Structure); 1900- (Schulze House)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian, wood-frame vernacular T-plan cottage","criteria":[],"status_note":"Physical condition is stated as excellent; current use is residential (rental).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.796865-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/9703/40970344/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86000864.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970344","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002322"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/schulze-walter-house-and-industrial-structure-86000864/"}
