It was built around 1890 as a two-story building and remodeled in 1913-14.","why_significant":"The hotel is tied to the growth of Waycross and to the railroad industry in Southeast Georgia, since it housed the travelers arriving on daily passenger trains. After the 1913-14 remodeling it was the most prominent hotel in the city. The remodeled building is also presented as an excellent example of a Spanish Revival-influenced style that shaped later local construction.","narrative":"Occupying a 200-by-111-foot block of downtown Waycross, Georgia, the Phoenix Hotel began around 1890 as a two-story brick building with a parapet, corbeled cornice, a two-story veranda and a small round tower. Its first floor held shops such as barbers, banks and clothing stores, while upper rooms served travelers arriving on the daily passenger trains. In 1913-14 the Waycross Savings and Trust Company spent roughly $100,000 to expand it, with local contractor V.C. Parker directing the work. A third floor doubled the room count, and a hip roof, stylized dormers, rusticated window trim and earthtone stucco gave it a Spanish Revival-influenced look. After the La Grande Hotel burned around 1915, the Phoenix became the city's leading hotel and also offered a restaurant and meeting space. Declining rail travel in the 1950s reduced business, and the hotel closed in the late 1960s. Its dormer design was later echoed in buildings such as Wacona Elementary School.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":"Remodeling contractor V.C. The hotel closed in the late 1960s, and the first floor has been modernized.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.850243-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/86000802.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000802/7361310be4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000802/7361310be4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenix_Hotel_front,_Waycross,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenix_Hotel_front,_Waycross,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76000656","name":"Waycross Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/waycross-historic-district-76000656/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209859","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Hotel_(Waycross,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16898329"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/ware-county/phoenix-hotel-86000802/"}
