It was also the center of local politics and government, and housed the town's only jail, until 1978.","narrative":"Built in 1906 on McDougal Avenue, this one-story brick building served the town of Chipley, now Pine Mountain, Georgia, as its first local government building. It held the city hall, city jail, and police headquarters, and was used for public meetings and military enlistments until a new city hall opened next door in 1978. Its front has a double-doored entrance, arched windows, and a heavy dentated cornice, and it looks much like the commercial buildings around it. Inside are a large main room and two small jail cells with barred rear windows. The building is valued as an example of the plain, functional design of a small Southern town's government building, and as the place where council meetings, elections, and the holding of prisoners took place. Bathrooms were added in the 1930s and wiring was updated around 1950. A 1985 restoration undid later interior changes, and the building now houses the Chipley Historical Center of Pine Mountain, with the city's archives and a local history museum.","period_of_significance":"1906","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Utilitarian, commercial-like small-town municipal building","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1985 and reopened in September 1985 as a local history museum and city archives; condition listed as excellent and occupied.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.840685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/86000796.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000796/c7ddc0b814-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000796/c7ddc0b814-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chipley-Pine_Mountain_Georgia_Town_Hall.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chipley-Pine_Mountain_Georgia_Town_Hall.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208623","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134365301"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/harris-county/chipley-pine-mountain-town-hall-86000796/"}
