It exhibits characteristics of the Federal style common to rural eastern North Carolina. It is also associated with Joseph John Pender, a wealthy planter and large landowner whose family settled the nearby crossroads community.","narrative":"Set on a wooded knoll a quarter mile northwest of Pender's Crossroads in rural Wilson County, this two-story frame house was built in the late 1830s or early 1840s by planter Joseph John Pender. It is three bays wide and one room deep, with a rear shed, a front porch with chamfered posts, dentil cornices, Flemish bond gable-end chimneys and nine-over-six sash windows. A central-hall plan and plain interior finishes remain, and a kitchen/dining ell was added in the early twentieth century. The house once stood on a plantation of several hundred acres, of which twenty-five acres remain. It was listed because few antebellum plantation houses in the county survive so little altered, and because of its link to Pender, a large landowner whose family gave the crossroads community its name. Later tenants made few changes, and the house has recently been vacant and used for hay storage.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1830-40s","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by Joseph John Pender, original owner)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Vacant for at least ten years and used for hay storage, with much neglect; tenants lived there until at least 1963.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.205034-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/7187/47718721/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/86000766.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718721","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_John_Pender_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24436319"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wilson-county/pender-joseph-john-house-86000766/"}
