Its location beside the railroad station made it a showplace linking citrus promotion with tourism, in harmony with the Mission Inn and the pergola-lined Seventh Street.","narrative":"Built in 1912 by the Salt Lake Railroad (later the Union Pacific) for the Sutherland Fruit Company, this packinghouse sits beside the railroad tracks just east of downtown Riverside. A stucco Mission Revival front with a curved roofline, arched windows and an arched doorway fronts a plain warehouse shed behind. A wood-frame addition at the rear was built in 1914 to handle growing production. Inside, a visitors' gallery let people watch citrus being packed, and the front room displayed oranges, lemons and other fruit products under the Banner Brand name. The building mattered as both a working facility and a promotional showplace, drawing train travelers who could then walk beneath pergolas along Seventh Street to the Mission Inn. It remains one of the city's outstanding examples of Mission Revival design and a contributing feature of the Seventh Street historic district. The remains of a concrete-covered pipe pergola still stand in front.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Fred Peter, Salt Lake Railroad","architectural_style":"Mission Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as in good condition apart from boarded-over windows; interior warehouse space needs extensive repairs, and stabilization work on roof trusses was under way in 1985 while adaptive uses were studied.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.880441-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/86000732.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000732/405932c46c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000732/405932c46c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SUTHERLAND_FRIUIT_COMPANY_RIVERSIDE_COUNTY_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860523","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133440991"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/riverside-county/sutherland-fruit-company-86000732/"}
