Its surviving evidence of up to four alteration phases and its archaeological potential support Criterion D. It also reflects Sherborn's development from early settlement through its 1820s heyday.","narrative":"Woodland Farm, at 104 Woodland Street in Sherborn, began around 1705 as a small one-room, two-story half house built by Hopestill Leland, one of the town's first European settlers. It stayed in the Leland family through the 19th century and has been in continuous use as a residence. Over time it grew into a five-bay, Georgian-style house: it was enlarged about 1715, reframed to its present width about 1760, given an east wing about 1820, and given a western ell about 1950. Later touches include Italianate brackets from about 1860 and shingle siding added in the mid 20th century. Inside, the east parlor has a chamfered frame with lamb's tongues, and the west parlor has a chamfered summer beam. The building was listed for showing several construction methods and styles in one early farmhouse, and for what its fabric reveals about rural building practice. A fieldstone wall and older trees keep its setting rural, and the area has high archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hopestill Leland (builder of the earliest portion)","architectural_style":"Country Georgian (with Federal and Greek Revival elements)","criteria":["C","D"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the form says the house has seen continuous use since it was first constructed, and outbuildings include a garage/apartment and a small milk house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.998767-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/77/7906/63790677/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000513.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000513/29e26e4013-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000513/29e26e4013-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SherbornMA_WoodlandFarmLelandHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SherbornMA_WoodlandFarmLelandHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790677","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodland_Farm%E2%80%93Leland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8032828"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/woodland-farm-leland-house-86000513/"}
