It reflects Sherborn's earliest scattered settlement along brooks, which grew into productive farms. It may also yield information on early building practices.","narrative":"This five-bay, 2½-story clapboard house on Brush Hill Road in Sherborn dates to between about 1680 and 1712. It keeps the profile of a First Period dwelling, one room deep with an integral lean-to and a massive brick chimney centered on the ridge, while showing Georgian-style detailing. A central-hall plan and narrow, simply framed windows complete the main block. A Greek Revival door surround with pilasters, entablature and sidelights was added around 1840. Later additions include a 19th-century rear ell and a one-story western ell from about 1950. The house may have been built by Thomas Sawin, a millwright who settled on Course Brook in the late 17th century, or by the Bullen family, who owned it through the 1700s. In the early 1800s Galem Bullard, a stonemason and farmer, lived here. In 1822 he replaced a marked oak on the town line with the W Stone, which still stands. About 34 acres belong to the property, but only the area around the house and outbuildings is included.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Possibly Thomas Sawin or the Bullen family (not certain); architect N/A","architectural_style":"First Period (transitional to Georgian)","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; described as retaining integrity of location, design, setting, materials, feeling, workmanship and association.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.322315-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7916/63791642/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000509.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000509/d56744c40b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000509/d56744c40b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sawin-Bullen-Bullard_House,_Sherborn_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sawin-Bullen-Bullard_House,_Sherborn_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791642","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawin%E2%80%93Bullen%E2%80%93Bullard_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7428640"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/sawin-bullen-bullard-house-86000509/"}
