Richard Sanger III bought the land that year from the heirs of John Hull, mintmaster of the colony. Sanger came from a prominent family whose blacksmithing business began in 1689. He inherited a sizable fortune in 1731 and increased it through trade and real estate speculation in Boston, Maine and Sherborn. He was one of only a few townspeople to own slaves in the 18th century, and he also built a tavern on the Boston-Hartford stage route, since lost. Architecturally, the five-bay facade has 9/6 sash windows and an off-center doorway under a triangular pediment. A large lean-to was added in 1775, and a sympathetic ell was built in the 1960s. It is the only house of its type in Sherborn and retains its setting, materials and workmanship.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["A","B","C","D"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; described as in a fine state of preservation, with a 1961 north addition and 20th-century outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.010084-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7915/63791522/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000508.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000508/ce19d12b28-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000508/ce19d12b28-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richard_Sanger_III_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC02969.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richard_Sanger_III_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC02969.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791522","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Sanger_III_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7328886"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/sanger-richard-iii-house-86000508/"}
