It was built by a prominent early 18th-century townsman and reflects the town's earliest pattern of dispersed agricultural settlement near the Charles River. It is also one of a cluster of early buildings useful for studying early architectural practice.","narrative":"Built in 1717 at 27 Hollis Street in southwest Sherborn, this 2½-story clapboard house faces south and has a gable roof, a large central chimney, and a single-story western ell. Its five-bay facade has symmetrically placed narrow windows with 9/6 sash. Dark clapboards and red-painted trim give it a simple appearance. It was built for Deacon William Leland, son of Henry Leland, one of the area's first grantees. William Leland served five years as Town Clerk, represented Sherborn in the General Court in 1735, and ran a prosperous farm. The property stayed in the Leland family until the mid 19th century. Far from the present town center on one of the community's earliest roads, the house reflects dispersed agricultural settlement along the Charles River. Unlike other First Period houses in Sherborn, it has undergone little exterior alteration, and it illustrates the move from First Period to early Georgian building. It was listed under Criteria A, B and D.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"First Period/Early Georgian","criteria":["A","B","D"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the lot is described as exceptionally well maintained, with an herb garden beside the main block and a 20th-century garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.576712-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/7920/63792024/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000503.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000503/1950afe18b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000503/1950afe18b-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Deacon_William_Leland_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC03000.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Deacon_William_Leland_House_-_Sherborn,_Massachusetts_-_DSC03000.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792024","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deacon_William_Leland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5245046"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/leland-deacon-william-house-86000503/"}
