It helps show early construction techniques and style change in a peripheral settlement area (Criterion D). It is also a fine 18th century farmhouse with later modifications (Criterion C).","narrative":"Set on a rise looking south over meadows and distant hills, this house at 52 Brush Hill Road in Sherborn grew in stages over more than two centuries. Its eastern portion dates to the late 17th century, when Deacon Samuel Bullen built what may have been a small First Period house with an integral lean-to. Around 1760, the Strattons probably enlarged it into a five-bay Georgian house with a central entrance, steep end-gable roof, narrow 9/6 windows and a \"Beverly jog\" ell. A Greek Revival entrance with sidelights and a variation of the Greek key motif was added around 1840. By the 1890s it was a summer home for the Fay family, and a Colonial Revival screened porch dates to about 1910. The property was listed because its changing use mirrors Sherborn's development, because it shows early building techniques, and because it is a fine, well-preserved 18th century farmhouse with later changes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Deacon Samuel Bullen (built the earliest portion in the late 17th century)","architectural_style":"Georgian with Greek Revival and Colonial Revival elements","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; a mid-20th-century garage with guest cottage is a non-contributing outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.62363-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7916/63791676/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86000496.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000496/45d723ceac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000496/45d723ceac-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bullen-Stratton-Cozzen_House,_Sherborn_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bullen-Stratton-Cozzen_House,_Sherborn_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791676","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullen%E2%80%93Stratton%E2%80%93Cozzen_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4996753"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/bullen-stratton-cozzen-house-86000496/"}
