The 1.3-acre nominated property also includes a stone-lined well and an iron gate with sandstone posts.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an exceptional example of late Federal architecture and one of the finest examples of early nineteenth century stone masonry in St. Lawrence County. It was built for the founder and leading industrialist of Hannawa Falls and links the area to an early period of prosperity based on forest products and water power.","narrative":"Built in 1838 beside the Raquette River in Hannawa Falls, this two-story house was the home of Gardner Cox, who founded the community and operated its sawmills, grist mills, starch factory and other enterprises. Its walls are cut red Potsdam sandstone laid in even courses with very thin mortar joints, and a flat arch of gauged stone voussoirs with a marble datestone marks the center entrance. The five-bay facade, twelve-over-twelve windows and wooden cornice reflect the late Federal style and Cox's New England origins. Inside, the front staircase, panelled doors with Norfolk latches, stenciled bedrooms and a rear ell with a working beehive oven survive. The first floor was reworked in the 1940s, and the original chimneys were removed. A power company bought the house in 1899 and used it as a superintendent's residence until 1940. The nominated land also holds a contemporary stone-lined well and an iron gate with sandstone posts. The nomination calls the masonry unsurpassed among the county's surviving nineteenth-century buildings.","period_of_significance":"1838","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; the interior first floor was altered in the 1940s but the front hall, second floor and rear ell remain largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.93117-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86000484.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000484/d26a33a580-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000484/d26a33a580-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Edward Betz","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garder_Cox_house..jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Betz</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Garder_Cox_house..jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321876","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardner_Cox_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5522592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/st-lawrence-county/cox-gardner-house-86000484/"}
