Palmyra in Orange, California, built in 1887 by hotel promoter Charles Z. Culver as his own residence.","why_significant":"It is the last surviving physical link to Charles Z. Culver, the Palmyra Hotel and the 1880s real estate boom in Orange. It is also one of the city's oldest and finest examples of 1880s Victorian architecture, and one of fewer than a dozen Queen Anne houses left in the city. It is also tied to grocer Eugene T. Lee, whose family owned it for decades.","narrative":"Built in 1887 at 205 E. Palmyra in Orange, California, this simplified Queen Anne house has 13 rooms, a five-gabled roof, a wrap-around porch, a small balcony, two square bays and turned posts with carved brackets. Charles Z. Culver, a land promoter and raisin industry booster, built it for himself while constructing the nearby Palmyra Hotel, a large \"Boom Hotel\" demolished in 1970. The house is the last physical reminder of Culver, the hotel and the 1880s real estate boom. Culver served on Orange's first city council before financial collapse in 1888 ended his time in the city. In the 1890s the house housed overflow hotel guests. Grocer Eugene T. Lee bought it in 1894, and his family lived there until 1930. Removal of later asbestos siding revealed original shiplap siding and fish scale shingles. Much of the interior fabric survives, including fireplace fronts, woodwork and the staircase. It is considered one of the city's finest surviving 1880s houses.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Simplified Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition; asbestos siding recently removed and restoration planned.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.907195-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/86000458.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000458/e6cc058494-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86000458/e6cc058494-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"DiyaCali","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20160930_-86000458_205_E_Palmyra_Orange_CA_(3).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DiyaCali</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20160930_-86000458_205_E_Palmyra_Orange_CA_(3).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"97000617","name":"Old Towne Orange Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/old-towne-orange-historic-district-97000617/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860193","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._Z._Culver_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q46996427"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/orange-county/culver-c-z-house-86000458/"}
