Trees from his land were used in its construction. The late Victorian house has a one-story porch with fan brackets and turned posts, a hewn stone foundation, three interior chimneys and a central hall with a ball-and-dowel screen. Original pine floors and mantels survive. It is the largest and most architecturally impressive house in Between. Upshaw served on the first town council when Between incorporated in 1908 and later became a Primitive Baptist minister. After his death in 1919 the house was sold to farmer W.T. Holder, whose family kept it until 1972. Only the house, its landscaped yard and a clapboard barn remain of the original property.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence, in excellent condition, with some alterations including a remodeled kitchen, enclosed rear porch and a modern deck.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.66851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/86000414.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209847","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134465915"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/walton-county/upshaw-james-berrien-house-86000414/"}
